School Choice is a game-changer in today’s dilemma of parents taking responsibility for deciding what best benefits their children. I still believe that parents know their children more than anyone else. Are they perfect? Of course not! However, taking away their role as parents and deciding for them risks weakening the foundation of communication between parents, children, and the school we want to build and establish.
Me and my Husband had The Choice
I taught my children at home, and it’s one thing I will never forget and will treasure for the rest of my life! I taught Grade 1 in Sunday School when I was in Grade 6. We met for an hour weekly at church to review what we needed to cover. My preparation started then. When I taught my children, I joined a Coop of parents who chose to teach their children themselves. Once a month we get together so the children will have the opportunity to play, and develop lifetime friendships. The parents will also pick a subject we are comfortable with and teach it to the children. We all help and support each other to make sure all the Lessons, tests, and Extracurricular Activities were covered to satisfy the Government Requirements.
The Coop of Parents was an excellent example that collaboration between families and community is possible. Our children experienced a learning environment that is enriching and fulfilling. This sense of unity and support was one of the most rewarding part of the educational journey for my family and the others as well.
Types of School Choice:
- CHARTER SCHOOL: Similar to public schools, charter schools are publicly funded. However, they have more control over their activities, operations, staff, and budgets. Since they have more control, it allows them to experiment with teaching methods, ensuring that they can adapt or adjust to the special needs of each student, thereby providing a high-quality education.
- VOUCHERS: Eligible families receive Government vouchers based on income and other criteria. The parents then choose the school their children will attend, and the school receives the voucher from the government. Check your State for up-to-date information.
- Magnet School: This public school specializes in a particular study area or focus. My grandchildren attend one of these types of schools in their area. They often have a thematic curriculum. They are science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). They also have arts or foreign languages. This type of school attracts a wider geographic area because of the process of the competitive application process. wider geographic area because of the process of the competitive application process.
- Homeschooling: It’s been a growing trend through the years. Parents choose to educate their children themselves. It offers flexibility and personalized learning to meet each child’s needs. Depending on where you live, the State and county, jurisdiction plays a part on the schooling. Generally, families are required to notify or report to local education authorities on their children’s progress.
- Online School: This has some of the flexibility of Homeschooling. Parents and children can continue their school activities even on vacation. Your children will have access to more diverse courses and even options to advanced placements. It’s affordable. Check the Voucher availability in your State and area. Like Brainfood Academy, online school is a combination of Homeschooling and a more traditional Schooling – all the benefits into one.
Alternative School Choice
Alternative schooling is becoming increasingly popular. Parents and children desire more options for their future.
